Firefighters' uniforms and gloves froze and fire trucks became encased in ice as crews battled to tame the blaze in Chicago
These incredible images show a warehouse encased in ice following a huge fire in Chicago. Around 200 firefighters battled for hours in sub-zero conditions to extinguish the blaze at the empty building on Tuesday night.
The minus 12C temperatures caused water from fire hoses to freeze, coating the building in ice as the blaze continued to rage inside.
Fire trucks were encased in ice and firefighters' gloves and uniforms froze solid. The fire at the abandoned factory was described by crews as one of the worst they had ever seen.
Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford told the Chicago Sun-Times: "We haven’t had a fire this big in many years."
